As part of our learning about Matariki we learnt about the seven stars of Matariki and the significance of each of the stars. We worked in groups to write about why each star is important and to draw appropriate illustrations on each star. We then put these all together to create our "Seven Stars of Matariki" mural.

Real Art Roadshow
This week we were fortunate to have the Real Art Roadshow at our school. With the visit from Dan Carter on Tuesday as well it has been a very busy and exciting week at Silverdale Normal School!
The Real Art Roadshow is is a very large truck which has been fitted out as a mobile art gallery. This contains a large selection of art works by New Zealand artists. The exhibition included paintings, drawings, sculptures, screen prints and photographs. The children were able to spend two sessions in the gallery observing, talking about the different pieces of art and drawing selected parts of chosen art works.
Here is a selection of drawings and the children's reflections about their visit to the mobile gallery.

ANZAC
After watching film clips about Gallipoli, reading a selection of children's literature about World War One and lots of discussion room 12 children wrote some of their thoughts about ANZAC and created a poster.
We were very privileged to have a visit from Private Hemi Flavell who came to room 12 last week and showed us the equipment that modern day soldiers used and how and why they use it. This was greatly enjoyed by all and enabled the children to compare equipment used by modern day soldiers and the equipment used in World War One.

Room 12 children used Koru patterns to depict members of their Whanau. The Koru shapes were painted and Maori patterns were added to them using pastels. Finally the background was coloured with crayon.
